Pentatone has another winner here! The 1973 analog 4-ch master has transferred beautifully in this DSD remastering. The sound is quite warm and spacious without blurring details. Accardo was in fine form during the sessions and exhibits beautiful and stylish playing throughout, as does I Musici. Tartini's music may not be as immediately "catchy" as Vivaldi's, but it's thoroughly enjoyable and exhibits a bit more musical depth in my opinion. If you are a fan of Baroque music, then this is a must-have!

There is no doubt that the age of this recording is very evident, despite its digital transfer to SACD format. But the beauty of the music and the buoyancy of the performances give it an irresistible charm that compensates for some of its drawbacks.

It is good to see a new release of music by the Italian composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and music theorist whose reputation now rests on the notoriety of his ‘Devil’s Trill’ sonata in G minor. In his day, Tartini was celebrated across Italy and beyond as a writer and performer of great versatility. His career stretched between the Baroque of Vivaldi and the early Classical tradition. Accordingly, his music is virtuosic without being flashy, and defined by clean, even spare, melodic lines.

All of these qualities are present in the three concertos on this disc, which date from somewhere between 1735 and 1750. The opening A major concerto is a four-movement affair – explained by the fact that Tartini wrote two slow movements (an adagio and a largo andante) without indicating a preference for either. The largo (track 4) is the more beautiful of the two. Its simple, sweet melody is played with great warmth by soloist Salvatore Accardo. The B flat concerto is a more complex affair, with fugal sections and leaping motifs recalling Bach as much as Tartini’s early Italian contemporaries. The final concerto in G major is perhaps the least memorable, although it concludes with a lively and rhythmic presto (track 10).

Accardo’s playing is faultless, and he is ably accompanied by the legendary I Musici – who, in a pioneering example of ‘authenticity’, dispense with a conductor. The downside of this disc is the 1973 recorded sound. Despite re-mastering, it still sounds hollow, with the dulled strings set back too far from the microphones. But Accardo’s playing is clear and sharp. The sleeve-notes are rather dodgily translated, but give as much information as the listener needs to appreciate the music.

If we seek a stylistic reference point for Kleiberg's music, it is perhaps not fanciful to refer to its recovery of certain qualities that we associate with northern Europe during the first half of the twentieth century. Composers as different as Sibelius, Nielsen and Vaughan Williams all established unique dialogues with central European and French modernists, but in ways that allowed for a tone of lofty idealism, even at times of frank romanticism that was unavailable to the modernists themselves. Kleiberg seems to continue and to extend dialogues of this kind. He has never been a slave to fashion, but it is striking that the neo-romanticism that is his most natural mode of expression, has once again become a part of our general culture.

As good a disc of these works as one could wish to hear.
Musically, this is very much meagre rations as far as Mozart goes but even then, there are many felicities that caress the ears and provide much pleasure to the listener. Often erroneously called "organ" sonatas, these utilise the organ as a continuo player in all except the last sonata. The orchestra is also limited (presumably by space in the organ loft in Salzburg where all these compositions were created for use in his employers services), with only 2 violin sections and double basses for all except 12 (adds 2 trumpets), 14 (adds cellos, 2 oboes and timpani) and 16 (adds 2 horns). The organ only gets a staring role in 17 in which it is even permitted a cadenza. Such factors lead one to wonder why Chorzempa gets given such prominence in the booklet when the Deutsche Bachsolisten under Helmut Winschermann do by far the lions share of the music making.
Even by todays HIP standards, this is well played and sensitively handled by all participants. Throughout, the articulation of the strings is a delight and they do not swamp all their notes with a cloying vibrato and Chorzempa's organ (from Mozart's day and much admired by Bruckner amongst others) is suitably bright and cheerful in tone colour. Tempo choices are remarkably astute and few would wish any of the sonatas to be taken any more than a smidgen faster, if at all. Balance is also well done between organ and orchestra with each allowed just the right degree of a starring role as the music indicates. Chorzempa's accompaniment up to sonata 16 is exemplary and he really comes into his own for 17. The solo Andante in F (K. 616) was originally conceived for a rich Viennese "Count" who commissioned Mozart to write something for his mechanical organ; in this performance, there is no way that one could describe Chorzempa's playing as mechanical and it makes for a lovely "encore" at the end of the set.
Pentatone's remastering of the Philips tapes is astonishing as one would never realise that this set was originally recorded in 1972. Characteristically, the level is rather higher than most other classical SACDs.

Bach’s compositions on this SA-CD are all so-called “free” organ works, (in contrast to his chorale compositions). Franz Liszt wrote the version for organ of his variations on the chromatically descending lamento bass fro Bach’s Cantata BWV 12 in 1863. Liszt treats the theme by no means in a purely virtuoso manner, but rather in a subtle manner as the foundation for a Passacaglia, after which the movements becomes increasingly intensified and talks on greater rhythmic complexity.
These are all famous and popular organ works recorded on the organ of the Grote Kerk, Breda (the Netherlands) and the organ of concert hall De Doelen, Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Both recordings are made in stunning 4 channel (quad) surround sound in 1970. Organist is the renowned Daniel Chorzempa. This was a best selling LP and also sold very well when re-issued on CD in the early eighties.

Which recordings of organmusic are timeless? Very few organists have had the musicality and craftmanship that makes their recordings after more than 35 years still worth listening. Chorzempa is one of them, and this CD should be on every organist's shelve. Chorzempa plays at Breda (Grote Kerk, Bach) and Rotterdam (Doelen Concerthall, Liszt), both Flentrop instruments. The Doelen is not the instrument for Liszt, but Breda will do for Bach although its plenum is not convincing in dense chords.
It is at Breda where I keep being surprised by Chorzempa's art of phrasing, articulation and choosing a convincing tempo. Quite astonishing as I thougt down in 1970 buying the old fashioned record, and I still do now listening at the SACD (thanks to the Philips engineers!) reissue. Note his inventiveness at the end of the paascaglia in track four. No wonder that the original Es-Dur has been replaced by Liszt: the weird slow tempo of the beginning of the fugue makes one laugh nowadays. Now we can enjoy the perfectly right and sweeping rhythm of BWV 543's prelude without reserve.
In the same edition: Chorzempa plays Handel's organ concerto's (4 SACD's). Musically and technically at a still higher level. If possible.

The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra is a symphonic tour-de-force and audio spectacular, featuring all sections of the symphony, separately and together. Based on a famous theme by Henry Purcell, Britten writes in essence his “Concerto for Orchestra,” taking the ensemble apart, then reassembling it in a grand and jubilant finale. Dynamic range is extreme.
Britten was a dedicated pacifist, and the Sinfonia da requiem from 1940 is his musical plea for peace. It begins with stark and dramatic drumbeats that will be a test for even the finest sound systems, and builds to tremendous climaxes. This early work is regarded by many as the finest of all his orchestral scores.
Peter Grimes, Britten’s most popular opera, is heard most often in the orchestral Sea Interludes and Passacaglia, some of his most haunting and atmospheric orchestral music. 'Prof.' Johnson’s transparent sonics allow one to “hear into” all these scores as never before.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this new recording is the exceptional performance by Michael Stern and the Kansas City Symphony. RR has made many fine orchestral recordings, and we feel that this is one of our very best.

This "Prof. Johnson" Surround sound recording exceeded all my expectations! I never thought Prof. Johnson would buck the classical music recording industry standard of having the orchestra in front and only using the rear channels for ambient information. To my great and pleasant surprise, the orchestra surrounds the listener with the strings reaching around to the left side, the trumpets coming from the right rear and the snare drum from the left rear, etc. Also the center channel is well utilized, revealing the inner voices of the orchestra. One almost gets the sense of being in the middle of the orchestra facing the conductor but with the orchestra still correctly positioned with first violins being on the far left, string basses on the far right. For you bass lovers, the bass was deep, full, round and plump!! It was a fantastically thrilling experience, and so incredibly life like and with such a warm acoustic with great reverberation of the hall so well captured. The recording was made in the Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence Missouri. Michael Stern and the Kansas City Orchestra have given us polished performances I found to be very well done with passion and verve. I feel with this recording, Michael Stern and the Kansas City Orchestra are now major player's in the classical music world. Superb!! Highly recommended. FYI - This is a 5.1 channel Surround recording (Bass is incredible even without the LFE channel. I listened both with and without the LFE channel on.)

With over 250 pieces, the Buxheimer Orgelbuch is the most extensive collection of keyboard music before 1600. Created ca. 1460 (1470 at the latest), the manuscript was preserved until 1883 in the Carthusian monastery in Buxheim an der Iller (Swabia, South Germany). After an auction, the manuscript came to the State Library in Munich.

Joseph Kelemen, expert for historic organs and especially for German organ music before 1700, has chosen two instruments for this recording.

Parts of the organ constructed by an anonymous organ-builder in the Church of St. Andreas in Soest- Ostönnen predate1425, making it one of the oldest playable organs in the world. Johann Patroclus Möller was entrusted with extending it in 1721–22.

The organ in the Innsbruck Hofkirche was built in 1558 by Ravensburg organ-builder Jörg Ebert. It is a Renaissance instrument with a rückpositiv based on 4‘ pipes that still has features dating from the Gothic. It is found in the swallow‘s nest on the side wall of the choir. oehmsclassics

This is a novel idea; the Russian period orchestra Pratum Integrum has made, for the Caro Mitis label, a disc entitled Telemann in Minor containing only minor-key works of Georg Philipp Telemann. While it is novel, it's not necessarily a difficult program to assemble, just among his purely orchestral compositions Telemann has no less than seven works in the key of D minor alone. Here, Pratum Integrum offers a selection of two concerti in C and E minor, a pair of sonatas in C and B flat minor, and a never before recorded orchestral suite in A minor. The sonatas come from a grey area within Telemann's literature in which he composed expanded chamber pieces that could be adapted into orchestral pieces with no more than a subtle shift in instrumentation, and he intended them that way. On this recording, Hansjörg Albrecht, conductor, organist and cembalist, artistic director of the Munich Bach Choir since September 2005, presents his elaborate arrangements for two organs (St. Nikolai in Kiel), in connection with a skilful multi-channel recording concept. The result is a real CD hit for Wagner fans, and a challenge for your stereo or surround.

If you like the sound of a pipe organ and like to bathe in its sonorities, this disc is for you. George Bernard Shaw used to say the only things worth hearing on a pipe organ were Bach and Wagner. There is no Bach here, but the Wagner Ring excerpts played here are done very well, with the exception of a slightly-too-fast Funeral March from Twilight of the Gods.

The recording is actually of TWO organs, one in front and one in back of a church with resonant acoustics, one by Kleuker, the other by Cavaille-Coll. Both instruments are interconnected electrically and also can be controlled by midi controllers which allow the two organists to overlay performances in order to cover, with four hands and four feet, what an orchestra plays in these dense scores.

The bass response on this disc will rattle and buzz every loose object close to your listening area. Right from the start, the 32-foot bass pedals are evident in the Rheingold opening and, over my matching tower speakers, which are flat to 10Hz, the bass response all around the room, with the .1 subwooofer, is nothing short of phenomenal.

One caution, there is much slow music here. The colors of a pipe organ playing this music are somewhat muted, compared to a symphony orchestra, but this is an excellent recital, recorded beautifully. It is a pity that CBS/SONY abandoned SACD and has not given us other quadro organ discs from their SQ quadraphonic days, like the Bach Four Toccatas disc at Freiburg Cathedral. That is still one of the best of the SACD surround discs.

Two Organs of the Kiel's St. Nikolai

These are not the first Wagner transcriptions for pipe organ, but the disc has several exclusive points in its favor: The organ is the largest French symphonic organ in Germany, and can be played simultaneously with a choir organ in the same space. The St. Nikolai space has excellent acoustics, and this is the first recording of such music in 5.1 multichannel. It is also the first such recording in which overdubbing was used to get an even more full orchestral effect that would have been possible in one pass. A number of separate recordings of sections using various registrations and voicings were placed on top of one another in the computer in a technique similar to that often used in pop music production but not normally used in classical. Don't let the "PCM" source scare you. The booklet says the original recording was 96k/24-bit, and it sounds hi-rez all the way. The dynamics, especially in the pianissimo end of the scale, are amazing. The violin sounds warm and blends into the sonic landscape of the orchestra better than some other works I've heard on "all DSD" recordings.

If you're not familiar with this particular Beethoven piece, it has a rather "modern" 5-note motif that is initially startling, sounding (to my untrained ear) out-of-place in a romantic work. But the as the composer returns to this phrase, he weaves it into the fabric of the concerto so masterfully that by the end of the first movement, it becomes beautiful and comforting. So much for my amateur music criticism.
The two "Romances" are short pieces that are more traditional, and easier to like on first hearing.
As for Mutter's playing, perhaps ignorance on my part is bliss. Her rubato doesn't bother me, although there are a couple of places that I do wish she had called less attention to herself and let the music sing. Overall, a very satisfying listening experience.

A wonderful disc. Miss Bezaly is a fantastic flautist with musicality to match. As other site reviewers have noted, not all these pieces were written for flute (and one wasn't even arranged by Mozart) but one would never realise given the response of Bezaly and her accompanist.
The allegro's are played in a very spirited manner (without a trace of anything but selfless virtuosity) and the andante's sing beautifully from Bezaly's flute. The Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra under Juha Kungas are vivid in their response. The one area of potential controversy will be the cadenza's employed by Bezaly: Kalevi Aho wrote these "interludes" which feed on Mozart's material but some aspects are decidedly not Mozartian - the range & harmonic language mainly. I enjoy these tremendously refreshing ideas but fully appreciate that not everyone will - they take a certain amount of adjustment compared to the more conventional cadenzas usually favoured.
The recording is well up to the house standard and is tremendously well balanced.
Enjoyable.

I have tons of organ recordings and to buy something else, still more of the same, was unusual. I had never heard the Liverpool Cathedral instrument and was intrigued. Tracey does know this huge instrument and its space. I found his performance of the Grande Piece Symphonique of Franck to be especially pleasing. I was lucky enough to hear Dupre play this piece at Ste. Sulpice and nothing equalled that experience, however Tracey does do a very excellent job with this and all on the CD. I'm happy I bought it.

These classic Living Stereo recordings will be familiar to most audio buffs and classical collectors. The usually-paired Respighi works were recorded in Chicago's Orchestra Hall in l959 and the Debussy the next year. BMG is to be commended for allowing us to now hear them just about as they were originally recorded, in three channels, and at a more reasonable price than the similar three-channel Golden Age series from Mercury Living Presence. What is fascinating about this piece is that Corigliano composed Circus Maximus with the explicit intent that it be performed in the round (in this case, in the Bass Concert Hall in Austin, TX). Thus, over the course of the performance, listeners will hear a large stage band in the front of the hall, a marching band that starts out at the rear of the hall, and a smaller “Surround Band,” which features small clusters of instruments placed above, behind, and to the sides of the audience.

In Circus Maximus, Corigliano invites comparisons between the Circus Maximus of Rome in decline with today’s media excesses where, as Corigliano says, “many of us have become as bemused by the violence and humiliation that flood the 500-plus channels of our television screens as those mobs of imperial Rome who considered the devouring of human beings by starving lions just another Sunday show.” The result is a striking piece of music that is, by turns, beautiful, savage, and strange, and at times a bit unnerving.

Description

About 1700 the Venetian composer Tomaso Albinoni published in his home town a collection of Sinfonias and Concerti a cinque which were to have great resonance especially north of the Alps. In the following years Albinoni wrote many more compositions of the same type which remained as manuscripts or were incorporated and published in organic collections of instrumental concertos. The series concluded with the Concerti a cinque in opus 10 published by Michel Charles Le Cène in Amsterdam in 1735 or 1736, when the composer's international fame was already consolidated. Albinoni's concertos were known and requested all over Europe, feeding a flourishing amateur market. Their success was closely linked to their characteristics: fantasy, felicitous melodic inspiration, demands of technique that were not excessive meant that these works were much sought after, especially by amateurs.

Albinoni is one of the very first composers who regularly used the three-movement form for concertos. This is the form already used by Giuseppe Torelli in the Sinfonias written for the instrumental groups at San Petronio in Bologna; but it is mainly through Albinoni that the model spread rapidly and found general application. The new genre of the Concerto Grosso had enjoyed a certain success at the time; based on dynamic contrasts and on the use of a great orchestral body set against a small group of three instruments, it was much used and appreciated especially in the Rome area.

3 symphonies by F.J.Haydn: what a pity he is not played more nowadays. With 104 to choose from, there must be one able to please nearly every concertgoer.
Maestro Boni chooses 3 from the early-mid-period, and conducts them very well: with elegance and thrust, but also perfect equilibrium, which is a sine-qua-non condition for this type of repertoire: music must flow naturally.
The Concertgebow Orchestra is and ideal vehicle for such good music.
The sound from Pentatone is the usual excellent one. A must disc!

A thoroughly delightful disc of music, a selection of early-mid Haydn symphonies. They are well played by maestro Boni and the Concertgebouw players. I enjoyed each piece equally. The sound is the usual Pentatone excellence.

This fascinating collection of little-known pieces for organ and orchestra was recorded in Liebfrauenmьnster Ingolstadt in 1998, using the 4 – 100+ Klais organ. The Widor work was commissioned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Villis Organ in Prince Albert Hall. Insteda of writing something new, Widor arranged two movements from his Symphony 6 and a slow, middle movement from Symphony 2. While this might strike some as an easy way out, the result is quite satisfactory. The opening Allegro manages to maintain a nice balance between organ and orchestra with sections for each to shine. The slow movement is very pleasant, but the organ is mostly occupied with quiet background commentary.

Jongen’s 1940 work to inaugurate a new organ in Belgium will immediately remind listeners of passages from his much better known Symphonie concertante. A short work (under 6 minutes), it has a strong, romantic flavour, with heroic brass and soaring strings. The same can be said of the longer and better crafted Hymne from 1924. Characteristic Jongen harmonies prevail, and one can revel in the haunting middle section, where slow-moving organ chords accompany a lovely string theme. If you enjoy the Symphonie concertante, you’ll love this piece.

The Parker concerto continues this romantic flavour, and if I and III are a bit disapointing, surely they are balanced by the stunning Andente. The orchestral writing is particularly noteworthy. Parker had a good sense of what works for each instrumental family. Too bad it was received with sugh indifference bz the critics. If you are unfamiliar with Parker’s compositions beyond his best-known Hora Navissima, this piece will surprise you.

Good performances all around. Unless there was some sneaky enhancement of the acoustics, the reverberation is splendid. It makes these pieces even grander than they are.
