TACTUS BAROQUE MUSIC: Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) - Sonatas for Violin and Violincelo, Opera VI: Enrico Casazza, Roberto Loreggian

Musicological studies are re-examining Tartini, a composer of great significance, as well as an excellent performer, pedagogue and theoretician. Indeed, his music exhibits such particular melodic and harmonic invention that he has been called a "pre-romantic". This judgement is obviously unhistorical for Romanticism was still far off in the future, and yet it holds a grain of truth: together with few other predecessors and contemporaries, Tartini felt the power of instrumental music at a time when it had not yet been accepted as an independent art capable of expressing thoughts or arousing affects. Strangely enough, although Tartini himself considered singing to be at the heart of learning to play well, he nonetheless composed very few vocal works. This apparent contradiction indicates, instead, the beginning of a definitive emancipation of instrumental music. And the solo sonata, by its very intimate nature, was well suited to this expressive end. In addition, it favored a stylistic exploration, which saw Tartini as precursor to so-called pre-classicism, a trend that was merely more evident in some of contemporaries. tactus.biz

The lengths to which TACET have gone to secure an all-valve (tube) recording chain for this disc might seem perverse to some, but I think that the sound quality that they have achieved is a complete vindication of their unusual approach. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, under their founder Karl Munchinger, were of course one of the stars of the Decca repertoire during the "Golden Age" of valve mastered recordings in the late Fifties and early Sixties, and this disc has the wonderfully warm string tone of the renowned SXL series LPs from that era. Of course, cynics (or diehard vinyl revivalists) might question the virtues of the latest digital techniques if all they do is take you back to the sound of 40 years ago, but you only have to listen to the dynamics and, of course, blissful silence during the quiet passages, to realise what benefits SACD can offer over its vinyl predecessor. The music is very appealing throughout - the Handel and Corelli are worth the admission price alone, and the other pieces are never less than interesting, particularly the Biber which was totally unfamiliar to me. The performances, to my admittedly inexpert ear, are impeccable, and very lively throughout. All this, and you get a joke too: "No conductor, no semiconductor....." - who says the Germans have no sense of humour?

The Tube is a collection of excellently played baroque music using Tubes though out the entire recording process. On the back of the SACD it says "No conductor - no semiconductor - I beg your pardon." The players on this SACD are the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and they have no conductor. The booklet explains how semiconductors were avoided in making this SACD. From the 2 Neumann M49 valve microphones, the tubed mixer, to the restored tubed Telefunken M5 2 channel Stereo Reel to Reel, to the editing by hand up to the DSD converter which does use semiconductors. However the booklet says "... in the course of being converted the signal does not pass through any transistors, but rather adjoins them and is measured: The transistors cannot 'pass on' any of their properties to it's sound. So we can rightly claim that for the music recorded here no transistor effected the sound in any way all at.
This 2 channel SACD has the most gorgeous sounding strings I have ever heard in any format, the sound and music are utterly beautiful. This is not a sampler but complete works by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. I especially love the first selection "La Musica Notturna della strade di Madrid" by Boccherini it is not only beautiful but exciting too, a major discovery for me. Also other gems by Sammartini, Avison, Scarlatti, Handel, Vivaldi, Biber and Corelli.
I highly recommend this 2 channel SACD to one and all; it was auditioned on my 2-channel high-end system.
Happy listening,
Teresa

...Dmitry Sitkovesky has arranged it for string trio (violin, viola and cello) and it works surprisingly well. Sometimes having three different instruments allows one to follow the contrapuntal intricacies of Bach with great precision. But more than that I love the sound of string instruments as well, especially the cello...

...Andreas Speer (the boss of Tacet) takes great care with his productions. "Small" house bosses like Speer, Robert Bahr(BIS), Simon Perry(Hyperion) and Jared Sacks(Channel Classics) (Klaus Heymann at Naxos is just as important but on a larger scale)will be the saviours of classical music as companies like Sony and Universal release less going into the future. If you really want to cry think that EMI gave $100 million US to that musical equivalent of sugar floss Mariah Carey to pay out her contract - imagine what Jared Sacks could do with $100 million! (I did Macroeconomics at University and I understand the financial reasons - it still makes me want to throw up though).
This is a 4.0 not 5.0 recording. Though the most important thing is that we have 2 rear channels I still would prefer 3 across the front. How much better would it be put the violin front left, viola centre and cello front right instead of mixing the viola half in the right and left channels and trying to make it sound like its coming out of the middle. If you have a middle speaker use it! Reproduction of the instruments (especially the cello) is first rate. Annoyingly one of the trio sniffles constantly throughout the performance, and while it is not as bad as Gould's vocalise it is a bit distracting at points.
I would have also preferred a bit more fire in the faster variations; sometimes we just seem to be cruising along. It is not Bartok but I think people would know from my reviews I prefer my performances to be fiery. Conversley the great Black Pearl variation could have been a tad slower, though these are really nitpickety points (minus half a point on sound and performance).
My advice is "Buy it!". It really gives a fascinting new slant on an old masterpiece.

These historical recordings have been treated lavishly in their DVD audio incarnation from Silverline. The base recordings were of high quality, and the transfers are very well done. The 5.1 surround sound certainly adds to the experience and works very well with this material - on a good system it is a joy to listen...

...The Italian 'Arts Label' is an unabashedly audiophile brand. One knows this when the technical documentation rivals Telarc for its exhaustiveness, whilst omitting musicological trivia such as the musical pitch and editions used. Luckily, it seems that neither the services of Shun Mook Mpingo discs, Shakti Stone Electromagnetic Stabilisers, cable elevators nor the Shroud of Turin were needed to midwife these successful recordings. Arts had previously released on DVD and DVD-A. It is interesting to compare this SACD to the Arts DVD-V of the same Accademia Bizantina with the same soloist, in Vivaldi's entire opus 8, including the 'Four Seasons'. This latter disc lasts 112 minutes, and was recorded in 1999. Both this and the Corelli, which was recorded in the same church as the Vivaldi, but in 2002, employ 24bit/96kHz PCM. The Corelli is more closely observed, almost giving a 'wall of sound' quality in the more exuberant movements. Both seem to bear the 'house sound' of lush immediacy without excessive reverberance, and a rich bass resonance which might be classed as tubby on some replay systems. The Corelli SACD has less bite on the leading edge of the notes compared to the Vivaldi, and a fuller but more relaxed flow to the texture. If I hadn't the benefit of the documentation, I wouldn't have disagreed if told it was a pure DSD recording. Hence, the engineers seem to have avoided the pitfalls inherent in close recording of period instruments, whilst retaining the immediacy and dynamic range. Those averse to 'in your face' recording styles will be pleased...

...Riccardo Minasi plays on a violin for most of the time but also a pair of viola d'amore when required. Accompanying him are Bizzarrie Armoniche, an ensemble of 8 musicians, led by cellist Elana Russo. A wide range of groupings are used, ranging from just organ in the third sonata, joined by trombone(!) in the eleventh sonata right up to cello, harp, theorbo, cembalo and organ in the fourteenth sonata (and many other combinations in between). Also used are a viola da gamba (sonata 6), a lyre (sonatas 1, 9, 10) and a bassett (a rasping double-bass type string instrument - very effective) in sonatas 7 and 12. Fortunately, their sonorities are most pleasing and not in the least bizarre!
Altogether, Minasi and Bizzarrie Armoniche make beautiful music, pointing out the differences in style and mood between the Joyful Mysteries (1-5), the Sorrowful Mysteries (6-10) and the Glorious Mysteries (11-15). Particularly effective is the fourth sonata with its chaconne pre-figuring Bach's great essay for the violin in the same form. Minasi also gets a solo opportunity to close the disc with Biber's wonderful Passacaglia, which is played with the same self-effacing musicianship that distinguishes the rest of the set.
The recording is also good, although Minasi feels a little disjointed from Bizzarrie Armoniche, with a pleasing bloom to the sound (though never too much) and ample clarity of lines.
Altogether, a very highly recommended set.

...From the top, to my ears this orchestra just got rid of all romanticized vibrato and played with pure tone, and as a result the instruments sound much older than they really are. The music's execution thus shows a small chamber orchestra becoming in touch with the past; it is a modern instrument orchestra that sounds like a period instrument ensemble. Changing to period bowing styles makes a world of difference and there is no question about it, the tempi are fast and there is nothing ponderous in these enlightened performances. On this disc nobody gets in the way of Vivaldi, nor interferes with him either, and all seem to be Vivaldi's advocates!...

"A triumph of surround sound recording (...) Many listeners may wonder if they really need another recorded set of the Brandenburgs (...). The answer is: yes, there is always room in any collection for a disc like this one." Bangkok Post

The Stuttgart performers display a highly attractive balance of authentic performance practice, faster tempi and a generally more fun approach to the concertos. They are aided by cleaner, crisper, higher resolution sonics that really put you into the middle of the performing ensemble...

...Having grown up as a lover of music in stereo, I am used to hearing music coming from different directions; but I have never been so close to (recorded) music; no other production has ever captured the mood of the recording location so intensively... stereoplay

Originally founded by Karl Munchinger, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra has been around for well over a half century, made many recordings and toured the world extensively. This is a fine collection of six of the “hit” concertos of Bach, including three which are reconstructions based on his keyboard concertos for one, two and three harpsichords... The most effective spatial layout of all is in the final concerto for 3 violins - a sort of Violin Summit. The three solo violins are assigned to the L, C and R frontal channels, with the orchestra itself again in a horseshoe pattern behind the listener. This is really effective and exciting when a theme is heard first from the right violin, then taken up by the center violin and finally joined by the left hand instrument. The change during a work happens in the second movement of the Concerto in E Major for one solo violin. In the first movement the orchestra sounds rather close and the violin soloist is more distant; the second movement moves the orchestra further away and brings the listener closer aurally to the solo violin to better hear the subtleties of this intimate movement. All these works - whether in multichannel or not - would never fit onto a standard CD - they run a total of 87 minutes. Only DVD allows the greater length.
