The Power Of Orchestra - Moussorgsky: Rene Leibowitz, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. SACD-ISO + CD

With the many recordings of both these works currently available and reviewed on this site, I think I can go straight to the audiophile considerations involved. This particular Living Stereo Pictures was recorded for RCA Victor in Kingsway Hall and engineered by the renowned Kenneth Wilkinson, five years later than the Living Stereo Pictures featuring Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The later version has been called by some one of the best-sounding orchestral recordings ever made. I must disagree and wonder why it was made when RCA had the blockbuster Reiner Pictures, which is one of the gems of the Living Stereo collection...

01. A Night On Bare Mountain 10:41
02. Promenade - Pictures At An Exhibition 01:31
03. Gnomus 02:29
04. Promenade 00:50
05. ll Vecchio Castello 04:41
06. Promenade 00:32
07. Tuileries 01:02
08. Bydlo 02:21
09. Promenade 00:45
10. Ballet Of The Chicks In Their Shells 01:09
11. Samuel Goldenburg And Schmuyle 01:59
12. The Market Place At Limoges 01:21
13. Catacombs: Con Mortuis In Lingua Mortua 04:32
14. The Hut On Fowl's Legs 03:15
15. The Great Gate Of Kiev 05:14

...I find the later recording more blaring in its sonics - not nearly as rich and balanced-sounding as Reiner’s version. While both conductors amp up the dramatic elements of the work, Reiner’s just sounds more musical, and it benefits from the three-channel reproduction of the RCA Red Seal SACD. The Leibowitz SACD has a flatter soundstage due to it being only two-channel. There is also less deep bass than in the Reiner recording. Finally, there is nothing else provided on the more recent recording, which runs about 43 minutes total, and retails for $29. Whereas the Reiner Pictures has a total of 71 minutes, filled out with short and dramatic pieces by Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Kabalevsky and Glinka in addition to the two Moussorgsky works, and it retails for about $10. ‘Nuff said.

General Information

Delores Stevens is a very fine pianist based in Los Angeles and played on the very first AIX Records release over 7 years ago. For this project she offered the Chamber Music Palisades ensemble in performances of two of the 20th Century's finest chamber music works and a new composition by Jane Brockman. These are terrific performances! We captured them using HD video equipment and our usual HD Audio approach.

About the Recording Approach

This recording is NOT an attempt to "document" a live recording of a chamber music ensemble but instead an exploration of the creative process of making and recording music on videotape and using high-resolution digital audio recording equipment. AIX Records uses no EQ, dynamics processing or artificial reverberation...everything you hear is as the musicians played it. Both "audience" and "stage" 5.1 mixes and a PCM 96/24 bit stereo mix are included on the disc on the DVD-Video side. However, it is the DVD-Audio 96 kHz/24 bit tracks encoded with Meridian Lossless Packing [MLP] that elevates the listening experience well beyond a traditional CD or even a live event. You can chose to listen from the middle of ensemble and hear the sound of the instruments coming from all directions or place yourself in the "best seat in the house". The dynamic range and fidelity offered by the 96 kHz/24 Bit source recording makes this recording come to life.

About the Disc

This DVD disc has two sides with digital data on them. One side, the DVD-Video side, contains the complete performances shot in HD Video, alternate mixes ["stage" and "audience"], DTS and Dolby Digital audio tracks and a comprehensive array of informational screens about the project and the performers. There are photos from the sessions and complete technical information about the recording.

About the DVD-Audio/Video Format

The DVD-Video side also contains a variety of audio/video media including: complete session videos, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, rehearsals, comprehensive explanation of the DVD format [including DVD-Audio, DVD-Video and DVD-ROM], digital encoding methodologies [AC-3, DTS, PCM and MLP], instructions on how to setup your 5.1 channel surround system, test tones/channel IDs checks and demonstrations comparing stereo mixes to 5.1 mixes. Everything you want to know about DVD and 5.1 channel surround is on this disc.

Rued Langgaard - Messis: Flemming Dreisig (organ). 2xSACD + 2CD

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was a passionate Late Romantic and a proponent of Symbolism in music, much like Scriabin and others were. Therefore most of his symphonic work was ignored by the musical establishment of the day, and only over the last 40 years or so with the ever expanding record labels and recordings, has there been a renewed interest in this unjustly neglected Danish composer...

...Technically, this is, I feel, a superb recording of an organ, the sound particularly in multichannel mode reproducing the ample acoustic with complete success. Indeed, this is one of the finest organ recordings I have heard; and with such rare and rewarding, largely romantic sounds, it is to be highly recommended.audaud.com

disc 1:
In ténebras exteriores, BVN 334 (1947)
Messis (Høstens tid), Drama for orgel i tre aftener, BVN 228 (1932-37)
Første aften: Messis, BVN 228a (1932-35, rev. 1951-52)

disc 2:
Anden aften: Juan, BVN 228b (1936)
Tredje aften: Begravet i helvede, BVN 228c (1937, rev. 1937-39)
Postludium til Messis, BVN 228d (1937)

...As mentioned before, Messis (The Time of Harvest), in the end of the world sense, is a two-hour long pipe organ trilogy. Its three parts consist of Messis, Juan, and Buried in Hell. It is loaded with philosophical concepts and symbolism, both musical and religious. According to the excellent booklet notes by Bendt Viinholt Nielsen, "Langgaard believed that the time around 1900 was a fateful epoch for man as a cultural being, and that the beauty-seeking music of the age pointed forward to the coming consummation and end of the world. This is not just a matter of nostalgia, but an idea that present-day, meaningful music must seize the moment and clarify the spiritual potential of the post-Romantic musical idiom." As pointed out earlier, this type of composition lies at the very core of a composer's output, in that it is meant to express, with sound, profound concepts and deep spirituality. This work in particular has many moments where the melody or the leading motif will haunt your mind for quite a while after audition. Like a mermaid's call, out of nowhere, I would hear part of it in my head, beckoning me to listen to it again. There is a strong thread throughout the whole work that ties everything together from start to finish into a very cohesive package. Now mind you, I myself am an organist and I do admire early 20th century composers, so my opinion of this music may be pre-determined somehow, but as mentioned before, it took me a while to warm to this piece of music, but now I just can't do without it. For more detailed information on this composer, click here to visit a website on Rued Langgaard.
This is organist Flemming Dreisig's second recording of this work, and therefore his understanding of its structure and meaning is second to none. His choice of registration and various stops from the softest Vox humana to the loudest 32' Tuba in the pedal of this Copenhagen Cathedral organ is always well planned. The Dacapo recording captures the space of the venue very well and never cracks under the pressure of this powerful instrument.

Press quotes from the CD version:

"...a sonic spectacular. The orchestra sounds full, natural, warm, and
nicely spread out over the soundstage. There is none of the glare that still seems to affect many orchestral digital recordings; even the highest register of the violins sounds smooth and musical. Climaxes are never congested, and the fullest textures still retain clarity... this is simply to enjoy."
  --Henry Fogel, Fanfare

"Paradoxically, the sound I heard offered a clearer, more 'natural' balance between strings, winds, brass and percussion than my balcony seat in the hall."  --John Michel, Skyway News Minneapolis

"...a mound of whipped cream, served with panache. The sheer virtuosity of the playing is a marvel -- this remains one of the great American orchestras -- and the interpretations are clean, light, sometimes tongue-in-cheek"  --Michael Fleming, St. Paul Pioneer Press

"Oue's program offers an inventive combination of worthwhile obscurities interlocked with superb versions of popular classics."  --Heuwell Tircuit, InTune

The so-called Brandenburg Concertos are a collection of six instrumental works which Bach wrote during his time as Hofkapellmeister in Cothen. He dedicated them to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg. Every single concerto is an interpretation for a variety of instrumentation. Through these works Bach portrays the progressive style of Italian instrumental interpretation, which he greatly admired.
ARTS Music now presents a beautiful recording of the Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 1 – 4, performed by the ensemble „I Barocchisti“, conducted by Diego Fasolis. Immerse yourself in this fantastic baroque interpretation and discover the incomparable repertoire of Bach’s instrumental music on Hybrid SACD in multichannel sound.

09. Concerto in A Minor BWV 1044 "Triple Concerto" - 3. Alla breve  07:50

Fasolis and I Barrochisti follow the scoring of the works to the letter, in terms of the solo instruments and the small ripieno orchestra which supports them.
Concerto 1 is a suite of dance movements, 10 of them which follow in quick succession, and feature a pair of natural or hand horns, typically used in hunting and not yet sporting the keys which the later French horns have. These horns are very difficult to play, as they are limited to notes of their harmonic series, but they have remarkably different sounds in different registers, unlike the modern horns which are "smoothed out" (more polite) in their tonal qualities. Bach, as other composers, including Mozart, relished these tonal changes, especially at parts of the register in which the tones were prone to "break" - much to the distress of the poor hornists! As well as the horns, there are 3 baroque oboes, a bassoon and a "violino piccolo" (obviously a small violin). Who else would pit these together? Fasolis and his men charge Bach's motoric rhythms with the spirit of the dance, the horns blaze magnificently from the centre back of the ripieno group, who sound to be arrayed in a semi-circle in front of you - no rear-channel gimmickry here. You can clearly hear that the two horns have different tone qualities, one deeper and richer, the other producing spectacular "blatting" sounds in its upper register. The piccolo violinist also produces some wonderful textures - dry spiccato effects on the gut strings and stunningly articulated running passages. There is wonderful solid support from the cellos and a double bass - indeed the characterful and clearly recorded bass lines in Fasolis' set is a prominent feature of the whole. Baroque music relied on terraced dynamics - the "invention" of crescendos by the orchestra at Mannheim was some years away. Listen how Bach screws up the tension and simulates a crescendo by adding more and more instruments, modulating rapidly and holding the melodic line over or under a pedal, which may itself in the treble or in the deep continuo. I Barrochisti are superb at doing this, with every line clear, and these held-back returns to main themes are thrilling.

Olga Martynova - Harpsichord Gems, vol. 5. 2009. 2SACD-ISO + 2CD

At the XVIII century pianoforte was an expensive novelty whereas harpsichord was a common musical instrument; so musicians chose harpsichord to start learning how to play. Nowadays it is vice versa: cembalo is expensive and rare so that the majority of performers begin their career with the piano. It happened to Olga Martynova as well, though she is an honoured graduate of Moscow Conservatoire from both piano and harpsichord classes.
As she says, the final decision to focus on historical performances was taken after she was present at the concert of Hopkinson Smith (the well-known performer on historical plucking instruments) in France...  caromitis.com

...I was surprised I had no other harpsichord recordings of the English Suites in my collection to compare, and the versions on grand piano are a different thing entirely.  However, this is the only SACD recording of the work, and Martynova turns in an exquisite performance with often rapid but not headlong tempi.  Her musicianship is extremely high, and she plays on a recently-constructed French harpsichord. The Polyhymnia recording team has achieved a rich and warm sonic for the instrument, in very natural surround on this Russian label.. - John Sunier audaud.com

Take sublime music, have a profoundly musical performer record it, capture it in state-of-the art sound, and you have this new 2-disc set! I have several of her other SACDs, and this one certainly doesn't disappoint. What a wonderful musician! She has tremendous technique but puts it to the service of the music rather than showing how fast she can play. I compared a few movements to Christopher Rousset's RBCD on the Ambroisie label. He is frequently faster, but her slower tempos allow the *music* to come through more clearly. Her rhythmic energy gives plenty of forward motion. Also, his brittle and nasal audio doesn't compare to Caro Mitis' warm, full, and detailed sonics. Highly Recommended

Gunar Letzbor - Ars Antiqua Austria

"Seventeenth Century Music and Dance from the Viennese Court" features music of Heinrich Biber (1644-1704) and Johann Schmelzer (ca, 1620-1680). It's a fine collection of what is called in CD notes "good old party music"—a generous (70:04) collection of dance movements, sonatas, "anonymous gems," and folk music intended to place the listener inside the Austrian baroque court and, on occasion, dance halls. Ars Atiqua Austria, a 13-member early music ensemble including five recorders, seems perfectly at home in this repertory, and they have been recorded with presence in a resonant acoustic.
