TACTUS ORGAN MUSIC: Diego Cannizzaro: Pietro Vinci - I Ricercari a tre voci

eac-rip: flac-img, cue, log, complete scans. rar, 3% rec.
1 CD - 280MB
TACTUS - 2008 - 512201

The ricercars for three voices by Pietro Vinci and some ricercars by Antonio Il Verso, his pupil In 1591 the most important contribution to instrumental music by Sicilian authors in the 16th century appeared: the Secondo Libro de Motetti e Ricercari a tre voci di Pietro Vinci con alcuni Ricercari di Antonio Il Verso suo discepolo, published in partbooks in Venice by the heirs of Girolamo Scotto and dedicated to the Prince of Paternò. Pietro Vinci, the founder of the Sicilian polyphonic school, was born in Nicosia (central Sicily, now in the province of Enna) in around 1515. He seems to have received his musical training in Sicily for his first known works, though published in Venice, were dedicated to illustrious Sicilian personages. Between 1567 and 1581, he lived in Lombardy, where he served for twelve years as maestro di cappella at Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. In 1581 he returned to his native Nicosia, and he died there in 1584. He probably traveled to Naples toward the end of the 1550s and the early 1560s, for he had pupils from Neapolitan circles. Pietro Cerone, in his monumental treatise , referred to Pietro Vinci by such epithets as musico singular, madrigalista moderno da imitar seguramente y sin peligro, inventor de las diversidades de los contrapuntos. Antonio il Verso, Vinci’s most important disciple, was born in Piazza (now Piazza Armerina) in about 1560. After the death of his teacher, Il Verso moved to Palermo where he died in 1621, leaving behind numerous pupils from the aristocracy and the clergy... tactus.biz

TACTUS ORGAN MUSIC: RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE PERIODS - Francesco Di Lernia

eac-rip: flac-img, cue, log, complete scans. rar, 3% rec.
1 CD - 307MB
TACTUS - 2005 - 550004

The instrument, the music, the performer, the audience: these elements together form a cyclical bond which in the last decades has transformed the practice and consumption of organ music in Europe, particularly in Italy. The rediscovery of the importance of historical organs, the cataloguing of the instruments, the improved quality of restorations, and the increasing number of concerts and recordings, all have contributed to a growing interest in the study and publication of keyboard literature specifically intended for historical instruments. Moreover, they have led to new directions in the specialized training of performers, and a slow but progressive interest on the part of audiences in the timbres of historical instruments and in a repertoire which, thanks to a new generation of performers, may now be fully appreciated. On this recording, two historical organs from northeast Italy illustrate, through their sound structure and timbre, both the continuity and the transformation of taste and language in organ music which occurred over the course of almost two centuries. A few decades after the building of the Callido organ in Venzone, the history of Italian organs would undergo a rapid change in tastes, increasingly moving away from earlier long-standing traditions. tactus.biz

B. Smetana: Ma Vlast - Walter Susskind, St. Louis Symphony (2004. MFSL) SACD-ISO + CD

...As for the recording. I have listened to it a couple of times now and, while not up there with the best of the really great Ma Vlasts (including all of Kubelik's recordings, esp. the live 1990 and Talich's 1950 mono recording), it is a great performance with above average sound. The sound on this performance is much like Susskind's Holst. Color is well brought to the fore and the often warm, burnished sound of the brass sections are highlighted. The trumpets are a little "blatty" sounding at times, however, and this distracts somewhat.
Susskind is well within the idiom of this music since he himself is Czech. The St. Louis SO is no Czech PO and while I enjoy the sound that is produced here, I really must admit I love the sound of the Czech PO under the numerous conductors that have recorded this old warhorse (Kubelik, as mentioned before is really my reference point for Smetana and Talich's mono recording is beautifully done in great mono sound).
I cannot rate the sound in MC since my system isn't set up for it yet since moving.
So in essence a great performance with above average sound.

Tracklisting:
01. Vysehrad ('The High Castle') 14:32
02. Vltava ('The Moldau') 12:13
03. Sarka 09:57
04. Z ceskych luhu a haju ('From Bohemia's Meadows And Forests') 12:03
05. Tabor 12:44
06. Blanik 14:30

I thoroughly enjoyed this performance! The music is played so lovingly and with attention to rhythm and inner harmonies. There are places that are faster or slower than others play it, but it's all done very convincingly and with feeling.
The sound is crisp and clear, and very nicely balanced. The climaxes are very loud and clear, but for the majority of the more melodic (and not loud) sound quality is very clear and analytical. It's hard to believe this is a 30 year old recording. The MC mix use the rear channels very naturally, and adds a lot of space and clarity to the sound-stage.
This is a highly enjoyable release and one that I will revisit often.

As titular organist at the Kreuzkirche in Dresden, Martin Schmeding worked from 2002 until 2004 in one of the most important centers for church music in Germany. After holding teaching posts in Hannover, Leipzig, Weimar and Dresden, he has taught as professor of organ at the Music School in Freiburg as the successor of Zsigmond Szathmary since the autumn of 2004, where he is also the chair of the church-music department. He has made numerous radio and CD recordings, among them the complete organ music of F. Schmidt, Brahms, F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy and G. Becker, as well as the first recordings on a period instrument of music for pedal piano by Robert Schumann and of the organ version of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach.

Early Music Review, Ausgabe November 2009

I am relieved that there are two versions of the Goldberg Variations played an the organ for me to compare. My faith was restored by listening to Martin Schmeding's interpretation, played an Silbermann' s glorious swansong organ in Dresden's Hofkirche. Schmeding does not attempt to retain the colours or texture of a harpsichord performance, and any ideas of this being music to fall asleep to are swiftly dispelled. But, given some reservations about whether this should ever be performed on the organ at all, I found this a very compelling listen. It is worth buying for the glorious sound of the majestic organ alone.

I have long been an admirer of the music-making between Fritz Reiner and his Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Most of his performances stand second to none in the classical music world, especially his interpretations of Strauss; a close personal friend. Having that said; I believe I have found the exception in this RCA Living Stereo Hybrid-SACD...
