Bottom line- this is an awe-inspiring recording and fabulous music making. Hyperbolic? I would give it six stars if I could.
Seriously, I could rave on about its analogue-era timbral accuracy, tonal neutrality, air, staging, dynamic range and dimensionality (yes, I’m afraid I really could). But, ultimately what matters is that this is an incredibly realistic recording of huge orchestral and choral forces playing in a real acoustic. And you don’t run across one of those every day!
The young Slatkin and his St Louis Orchestra surpass themselves. As a lover of the great Eisenstein film, the whole experience just takes you back to the great evocative scenes of the demonic Ivan in his lair, the storming of Kazan and so on.
This is one of the few Mobile Fidelity recuts still available at non-obscene prices, so you know what you have to do. Run, do NOT walk to your nearest PC and order it at once.
You won’t be sorry.
Out Of Print! Only a few copies available!
Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab once again is presenting the finest in classical music. This stunning recording was previously only available as part of a larger collection. This is its first release as a single disc and is being re-issued in surround as originally recorded for Vox.
This score was composed for Eisenstein's early 1940s film and can rightfully be considered a companion piece to his and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, considered a masterpiece for both creators. The full spectrum of this stellar recording is unveiled as four channels of stunning detail and imaging enabling listeners to experience the studio recording as in a concert hall setting! The Vox catalogue has long been among the most respected and this recording from 1979 by Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony is one of its jewels. This Ultradisc UHR™ SACD was mastered by MFSL, same team responsible for the acclaimed version of Ravel's Bolero.
First time in Multi-Channel, Prokofiev's Ivan the Terrible, previously only available as part of a larger collection is now available from MFSL and SACD!
