On an almost 78 minute disc, we have here the complete music that Ward wrote for 5 and 6 viols.
All of it is achingly beautiful, whether in 5 parts (14 tracks) or 6 parts (9 tracks), so much so that it immerses one completely in reveries. For some listeners the various fantasias may be a little too alike in character to listen to this set all at once but even as a musical antidote to stress and anxiety it cannot be too highly recommended - there is not much purely instrumental music from this epoch of this quality.
In all the pieces, Phantasm make light work of the constantly weaving melodic lines (the writing is highly reminiscent of vocal compositions of the day) and are joined by one or both of Emilia Benjamin and Mikko Perkola. At no time is it apparent of any weak link in ensemble or of any unfamiliarity between the players; indeed they provide a wonderfully uniform and warm response to the music. Their tone as well is a joy to the ear, full of light and warmth.
The sound is one of Linn's best efforts to date - there is such a luminescent quality that causes one to question whether a consort of viol's has ever been recorded so accurately before. The accoustic of Wadham College Chapel adds greatly to the enjoyment, bestowing a halo to the sound. And before I forget, the notes are excellent too.
 Highly recommended.

  1. There is a way to burn SACD-R's on Macs, just use DiskUtility that comes with every mac. It will happily burn SACD-R iso's posted here onto DVD5's.

  2. I burned two discs, one with Imgburn v. 2.5.6.0 (no warnings as mentioned on the homepage), the other one using diskUtility on my Mac. I cannot play both discs on my Marantz SA-8400. Compatibility problem? I don't know. It is my first attempt, as I could not find the dl link for the CD. Any suggestions here would be appreciated very much :-)

Thanks for your reply. Just bad luck. Your links for the CD elsewhere are dead. Any way to reup these so that I can enjoy this music?
Is there some way to rip the music from the burnt discs?
