Music by Bach, played on the historic Strand organ of Alem, Smaland, Sweden. Chorales sung in Swedish.

In the Alem church, eastern Smaland, Sweden, one finds a very interesting organ with a great sound, originally built by Per Zacharias Strand in 1842. During 2003 – 2004, this organ went through an extensive renovation. The Alem Organ Factory rebuilt it to its original 1842 disposition, adding a small second manual in the Strand style. In the spring of 2005, I gave a recital on the “new” organ and was captivated. When the parish board asked me to make a recording on this instrument for documentation purposes, I gladly accepted...

...This recording consists of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, the great master. There is probably no other instrument that, like the organ, has a repertoire dominated to such an extent by one composer. Although the repertoire available for this instrument is huge, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) is unique. He is the giant who has given organ players a repertoire that has everything a musician might wish for. No other organ music is as tailor-made for the instrument, giving the organist such a complete musical and artistic pleasure while also making the most advanced technical and musical demands.

My wish is to create an atmosphere of worship; the recording starts with a larger organ piece and finishes with another one, and in between, there is a regular service with hymns, prayers, and even a sermon in the middle. This sermon consists of one of Bach’s motets, Komm, Jesu, komm, sung by Olaus Petri Vocalis. Three chorales are sung in unison by the Alem parish choir and Olaus Petri Vocalis. The latter ensemble sings three chorales in four-part settings by Johann Sebastian Bach. Also included in the program are three Bach compositions on Kyrie eleison and Christe eleison, the prayer which is sung in many services, as well as Allein Gott in der Höhe and Wir glauben all an einem Gott, the “Creed chorale”. In the end of the program, an organ composition on Vater unser im Himmelreich (The Lord’s Prayer) is followed by the four-part choral setting. The last hymn is the festive Nun danket alle Gott; then comes the “voluntary”, Concerto in G major. (Text, written by Ulf Samuelsson, from the booklet)
