RE-UP. CARO MITIS: Olga Martynova - Harpsichord Gems, vol.1-5. 6xSACD-ISO, 6xCD

At the XVIII century pianoforte was an expensive novelty whereas harpsichord was a common musical instrument; so musicians chose harpsichord to start learning how to play. Nowadays it is vice versa: cembalo is expensive and rare so that the majority of performers begin their career with the piano. It happened to Olga Martynova as well, though she is an honoured graduate of Moscow Conservatoire from both piano and harpsichord classes.
As she says, the final decision to focus on historical performances was taken after she was present at the concert of Hopkinson Smith (the well-known performer on historical plucking instruments) in France... caromitis.com

...It must have been an incredible experience to see Olga record this. Listen to this track if you have any aspirations to play the harpsichord - it defies belief! Having listened in awe to the whole disc I returned to track 11 and played it again and again.
Lovely music. Lovely instrument. Not only a virtuoso performance but melodic and listenable to boot. Superb recording. What more could you want?

This release is Volume 1 of a series on the Russian label titled
Harpsichord Gems. It may seem rather odd to see albums of early music coming from such a source, but there is a small group of Russian musicians specializing in this genre, including the Pratum Integrum Orchestra, with which young Martynova often plays. In fact she is one of the premier harpsichordists in Russian today. It was her idea
to record some of the clavier sonatas of Johann Christian Bach, and she selected the six presented here..

Harpsichord Gems, vol.2: The Great Transcriptions

Catalog Number: CM 0072004

The Caro Mitis sacd´s are all works of art. They are the most beautifully crafted silver discs ever. Covers are chosen with utmost care and taste, they are all exquisite. The inserts are not only informative, but also a treat for the eye. And the icing on the cake..they are all recorded by Polyhymnia. So every baroque lovers dream has come true, yes, the music making is up there on the same level.
I have the fifteen sacd´s released so far and I am impressed, to say the least. I would like to give Caro Mitis an award for being the most serious and "thought out" record company for ages. Class through and through.
This is a marvellous disc of Harpsichord gems...

Keyboard instruments, but primarily the harpsichord, had great popularity in the 18th century.  Orchestral and chamber works were transcribed for keyboard performance by amateurs.  Often new works were offered in two versions: one for ensemble and one for harpsichord.  Geminiani, for example, didn’t even write works for harpsichord, but published keyboard versions of some of his violin sonatas, and the closing selections on this disc are four such
movements. Weiss was a prolific composer of music for the lute, usually written in tablature form rather than on the normal musical staff. He created over 600 such works, and since both the lute and harpsichord are plucked instruments transcription to the keyboard involves very little effort.  All eight movements are dance forms such as
Courante, Gavotte and Gigue.  The longest is the majestic and meditative Allemande.

...The tone of the William Dowd harpsichord is gorgeous and the recording quality is incredible. It might have been an unusually freezing cold February outside when it was committed to tape, but you wouldn't suspect anything from the performance. Olga is on top form - a true virtuoso. ...Recording is ambient, with a fair bit going on in the rear speakers. I've listened to it on two different set-ups, both quadraphonic and 5.1 - it sounds lovely through both

Harpsichord Gems, vol.4:  Everything You Wanted To Know About Harpsichord, But Were Afraid To Ask

Catalog Number: CM 0102006

I would have jumped to cover this SACD just from its wonderful title even if I didn’t own a harpsichord myself.  Ms. Martynova is a leading harpsichordist in Russia as well as Europe and has appeared on other Caro Mitis releases.  She studied in France and has long had an interest in expanding the interest in and the repertory for the harpsichord by performing works other than those composed in the 17th and 18 centuries. However, she has not been that attracted by the works of most contemporary composers for her instrument (and I share her opinion on this).
Martynova was moved to find works for the piano by Romantic period and modern composers which seemed to work well when played on the harpsichord...- John Sunier audaud.com

Harpsichord Gems, vol.5:  J.S. Bach - English Suites

Catalog Number: CM0032007-2

...I was surprised I had no other harpsichord recordings of the English Suites in my collection to compare, and the versions on grand piano are a different thing entirely.  However, this is the only SACD recording of the work, and Martynova turns in an exquisite performance with often rapid but not headlong tempi.  Her musicianship is extremely high, and she plays on a recently-constructed French harpsichord. The Polyhymnia recording team has achieved a rich and warm sonic for the instrument, in very natural surround on this Russian label.. - John Sunier audaud.com
