As titular organist at the Kreuzkirche in Dresden, Martin Schmeding worked from 2002 until 2004 in one of the most important centers for church music in Germany. After holding teaching posts in Hannover, Leipzig, Weimar and Dresden, he has taught as professor of organ at the Music School in Freiburg as the successor of Zsigmond Szathmary since the autumn of 2004, where he is also the chair of the church-music department. He has made numerous radio and CD recordings, among them the complete organ music of F. Schmidt, Brahms, F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy and G. Becker, as well as the first recordings on a period instrument of music for pedal piano by Robert Schumann and of the organ version of the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach.

Early Music Review, Ausgabe November 2009
I am relieved that there are two versions of the Goldberg Variations played an the organ for me to compare. My faith was restored by listening to Martin Schmeding's interpretation, played an Silbermann' s glorious swansong organ in Dresden's Hofkirche. Schmeding does not attempt to retain the colours or texture of a harpsichord performance, and any ideas of this being music to fall asleep to are swiftly dispelled. But, given some reservations about whether this should ever be performed on the organ at all, I found this a very compelling listen. It is worth buying for the glorious sound of the majestic organ alone.
