..One of the finest of all of Reiner records is his reading of the Lt. Kije Suite, Prokofiev's incidental music for a long-forgotten 1933 Russian film. The title character is created by a typographical error in a military report to the Czar, and so to avoid embarrassment (or worse) Kije's inventors detail the life of their “hero” from birth to burial. In keeping with Kije's fictitious origins, Prokofiev paints his musical biography in purely mock emotions, using, for example, bland fanfares to announce his birth and a whiny cello and plaintive bassoon to drain the love theme of any ardor. All of this wryness is captured perfectly by Reiner's dry precision, which conveys subtle sarcasm through an exquisite blend of accents, balances and phrasing. The other works both hark back to earlier times and styles. The Stravinsky is intended in the idiom of Tchaikovsky but with distinct neoclassic overtones, resulting in a lean, coy attitude which Reiner expresses wonderfully. The Hovhaness, although written in 1955, is deeply romantic. Despite its mystical title and ambitious program it's very easy on the ears and Reiner makes the most of its colorful content. It's a pity that this recording has become somewhat hard to find- the arrangements are simply lovely (as well as some of the original works for organ and cello such as the Prayer by Saint-Saens). Although Rostropovich's lush sound does not completely match well to this recording's rather harsh harpsichord, the effect is quite wonderful on the pieces with organ. Highly recommended if you love the cello.

...Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911), a student of Lemmens, is possibly the most important classicist in the area of French organ music. Guilmant was like many of his contemporaries a versatile musician, who maintained close ties with other composers of his generation. In 1871 Guilmant became organist at the church of St Triniti in Paris, and in 1894 he founded the Schola Cantorum together with Vincent d’Indy. Joseph Bonnet and Marcel Dupre were among his students...

...In 1871 Leon Boellmann entered the Paris Ecole de musique classique et religieuse, the so-called Ecole Niedermeyer. Favourably supported by Gustave Lefиvre, the director of the school, and Eugиne Gigout, his future adoptive father, Boлllmann finished his studies with numerous first prizes. In 1881 he received a post as organist at the church of St Vincent de Paul in Paris...

...Francois Fetis (1784-1871) studied at the Paris Conservatoire, acted as organist and music teacher at the collegiate church St Pierre in Donai from 1813 to 1818 and was appointed director at the Brussels Conservatoire in 1833. Fйtis owes his fame mainly to his educational efforts, which culminated in a set of music textbooks. Among his numerous publications are the Biographies Universelles des Musiciens, which tell us about the influential musicians of his time, and the Science de l’Organiste, a historical anthology of the organ music from the 16th to the 19th century... Read more
