...The main figures on this CD are George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) and Nicola Porpora (1686-1768). Both lived and worked in Venice at different times of their lives, and both were sought-after composers in London. Porpora, however, later fell into oblivion after the Neapolitan opera went out of fashion in the late 18th century. Even if Porpora's instrumental works represent only a small percentage of his overall output, the originality of his works was highly esteemed in his day, and the Virtuosi delle Muse succeed in giving voice to the beauty and songfulness of his works. Francesco Gasparini (1668-1727) began his career in Rome before going on to the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. Antonio Caldara (1670-1736), a native of Venice, was a singer and instrumentalist at San Marco before transferring to Mantua and, later, Vienna. Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) and Tommaso Albinoni (1671-1750) were members of the Venetian nobility who lived and composed in Venice. Read more

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra bring us a remarkable performance of select masterpieces from Tchaikovsky, including the well-known 1812 Overture, complete with live cannon recordings.  These cannons start firing their first round of shots at time counter 12:33, and continues with additional volleys in the 6-channel  DSD  (Direct Stream Digital) recording at about 14:41.  Recorded with DSD's wide extra dynamic range, these cannon blasts are indeed loud, so pay serious attention to the box's warning about setting the playback volume level conservatively during your first go at the title track.  As exciting as the cannons are, you don't want to find your speaker drivers on the floor in front of your loudspeakers.   Joining in just for the title track are the Kiev Symphony Chorus and Children's Choir of Greater Cincinnati.  The performance is awesome during this title track, but the recording and resulting mix are just shy of ideal... This is the year that the musical world celebrates the 100th birthday of Shostakovich. Possibly one of the 20th century’s most important (and considered by some to be the most important composer of the 20th century) there has been a flood of new recordings (both on redbook as well as SACD) of the music of Shostakovich.
While Caro Mitis and their two killer ensembles (Pratum Integrum and Hermitage Chamber Orchestra) have been regaling us with stunning offering of well known composers like Bach and Mozart, we have also been treated to some excellent unknowns like Wölfl and Rebel. This SACD (along with the Britten recording) is a somewhat different offering, though not one lick less enjoyable.
All of the composition are arrangements of other pieces, from the Elegy in f sharp minor (a reworking of a soprano’s aria from his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District) to the 10 Preludes, Op. 34 originally a set of piano composed consecutively in all 24 key signatures. The two Prelude and Fugues Op. 87 (in c minor and B Major) are later compositions from a set of pieces written in 1950 (the bicentenary of J.S. Bach’s death) modeled after Bach’s own Das Wohltemperierte Klavier or The Well Tempered Clavier). The final composition, arranged with the help of Mikhail Utkin, is a suite. The Ballet Suite for Flute, Oboe, Strings and Percussion is a compilation of selections from ballets composed by Shostakovich (The Limpid Stream, The Bolt and The Golden Age)...

… The performances by I Virtuosi delle Muse, directed by Molardi from the harpsichord, are superb. Most notable are the ensemble’s rich but subtly graded palette of colours (to accord with Charles de Brosses’ enthusiastic observations after hearing Vivaldi and his orchestra in Venice), rhythmic vitality and atmospheric renditions of the slow movements. This last quality is enhanced by the surprising appearance of the viola d’amore among the strings, which Molardi believes often participated in 17th- and 18th- century Venetian orchestral ensembles.

… I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed their renderings of Le sinfonie. They are dramatic and well executed, if not over the top, like some Italian recordings I've had to suffer! The sound of the band varies from track to track, to suit the music (and, suggests the booklet, the theme of the opera with which each is associated, though I take that with a large pinch of salt). Clearly, I Virtuosi delle Muse are a group to watch, and Divox Antiqua should be justly happy to have signed them up

Antonio Vivaldi : Opernouvertüren : Nie gehörtes aus der Feder Vivaldis findet sich auf dieser CD – aber das ist noch nicht einmal das Interessanteste. Sondern der Orchesterklang, den die Virtuosi delle Muse für Vivaldi finden. Angelehnt an Berichte von Zeitgenossen über das Spiel Vivaldis zu seiner Zeit interpretieren die Barockspezialisten die Opernouvertüren, mit großer Freiheit, feinen dynamischen Differenzierungen und mit einem neuen Klang, der nicht zuletzt durch die Verwendung der Viola d’amore als Orchesterinstrument zustande kommt.
