I would have jumped to cover this SACD just from its wonderful title even if I didn’t own a harpsichord myself.  Ms. Martynova is a leading harpsichordist in Russia as well as Europe and has appeared on other Caro Mitis releases.  She studied in France and has long had an interest in expanding the interest in and the repertory for the harpsichord by performing works other than those composed in the 17th and 18 centuries. However, she has not been that attracted by the works of most contemporary composers for her instrument (and I share her opinion on this)...

Jennifer Bate has recorded for the SOMM label the complete organ works of Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). The five CDs comprise an incredible number of 68 pieces, from his first composition (aged 11) to his last thoughts. Among these are four fragments, which Jennifer completed in the composer's style. Many pieces are now recorded, published and performed for the first time, thanks to the research of Professor Christian Martin Schmidt, the acknowledged leading authority on Mendelssohn. The CDs are being released 2005/6 on SOMM 050-054 (mid price).
Jennifer Bate recorded on six important romantic organs: the early works on the classically-voiced (Walker) organ at Wimborne Minster and the remainder, which progress to more romantic voicing on the organs of The Temple Church (Harrison & Harrison), St Matthew's Bayswater (Walker) All Saints Margaret Street (Harrison & Harrison), St Stephen's Bournemouth (Hill) and St John's Upper Norwood (Lewis).
Jennifer's extensive research into the life and works of Mendelssohn was recently greatly assisted by Professor Schmidt, whose comprehensive study revealed many textural errors in previously-published scores. His new edition of Mendelssohn's organ works form three volumes of the nine new Breitkopf and Härtel Complete Mendelssohn edition.
Jennifer said about this colossal project "It was a life's ambition to record Mendelssohn's organ works and so exciting that the project coincided with new research and the discoveries now published in the new edition".

One receives one's money's worth for certain with this disc - both in performance time and in quality of the performances and their surround sound recording. But there is also a mystery. Something seems to have gotten lost in the translation of the original album concept from the Russian.  There's the odd album title, engravings of a sea monster on the front and inside of the note booklet, and even on the beautifully-decorated printed side of the disc. Yes, Rosetti, who lived until 1792, was in fact Bohemian-born, but what is the point of the sea monster and the Mutineer bit?...

I am not going to review the work per se but the DVD-A recording and this version, as I must assume you have some prior knowledge of this masterpiece to be reading this. Suffice it to say that as recordings of this work go (it was recently exhaustively reviewed in the Oct. Gramophone), this one by Previn and the LSO can easily hold its own. The strengths are in the way the entire structure of the work is held together, the detail in all of the myriad layers, and the balance of the recording. This was one of the first recordings to "break" this work to a wider audience, and the original recording dates from 1978 at Abbey Road studios. It has been remastered for DVD-Audio and is absolutely stunning to listen to. If you didn't know its vintage, you would swear it was a digital recording. Often times, recordings from Abbey Road can sound like, well, what they are - a big, dull room versus a concert hall or church venue. The best recordings from there, on the other hand, are known for the tight, well-controlled bass, the ability to always hear all of the inner detail even in works of dense instrumentation, and the pleasant ambience of the room, resembling a smallish church acoustic. This EMI recording is in the latter category. As I've never heard the original CD version of this recording, I can't say how this compares, but if you have gear that will play DVD-A and are looking for a demonstration-class recording of a masterpiece of modern music, look no further. "Seventeenth Century Music and Dance from the Viennese Court" features music of Heinrich Biber (1644-1704) and Johann Schmelzer (ca, 1620-1680). It's a fine collection of what is called in CD notes "good old party music"—a generous (70:04) collection of dance movements, sonatas, "anonymous gems," and folk music intended to place the listener inside the Austrian baroque court and, on occasion, dance halls. Ars Atiqua Austria, a 13-member early music ensemble including five recorders, seems perfectly at home in this repertory, and they have been recorded with presence in a resonant acoustic.
