...I don't find this work my favorite of Strauss' large orchestral tone poems, but I must admit upon hearing it again that he must have had a very heroic and exciting day in his family life - which is what he intended to portray in the symphony. There are themes representing the Papa, Mama and baby. The contrasts between chamber-like passages and the impact of the full orchestra are frequent and more effective than ever with the three-channel reproduction. A switch to two-channel is necessitated with the little suite from Strauss' incidental music to Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The combination of its chamber orchestra setting and Neoclassical thrust made it perfect to accompany performances of Moliere's 17th century play. Its Baroque style is emphasized by Strauss having used some themes which Lully had originally composed for the premiere performances of the play. "This is highly spectacular music written in an accessible atonal idiom reminiscent of Dutilleux, Lutoslawski, Messiaen, and other mainstream contemporary composers. A student of Alun Hoddinott, John Buckley (born 1951) is one of Ireland's most prominent musicians. The Organ Concerto (1992) is a powerful piece, full of sound and fury, driven by the impetuous rhythms and violent dynamic onslaughts of the solo instrument, frequently opposed to a volcanic percussion section. The overall shape retains a traditional, three-movement structure, with an intensely lyrical Adagio molto framed by two impulsive, shorter counterweights. More innovative, the Symphony No. 1 (1988) offers thickly textured passages of great expressive variety, in which sudden flashes of light illuminate darkly colored orchestration. Charged with tension, the whole piece seems to be waiting for the long-delayed, brusque resolution. Well treated by the spacious-sounding recording, this is virtuoso music that requires virtuoso performers. As far as one can tell, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland plays with real commitment under Colman Pearce, and organist Peter Sweeney displays an impressive capacity to rise to the music's spectacular solo demands."

Upon his return to the Russian court he became director of vocal music at the court chapel and improved singing standards as well as composing many sacred choral works and three comic operas in French...

Excellent conclusion to a famous era. The Rachmaninoff, being recorded in January, of 1956 along with the 2nd Piano concerto of the same composer, was the lasting tribute to two great musical performing together. They had their first meeting in April, of 1954 when the duo recorded the Brahms 1st, which was an astounding success, and critics along with RCA hoped that the two would do more recordings of famous concertos together. But, Rubinstein who loved to travel and make his place in the world, became almost non-existent after the Brahms session (which is available through Classics as LSC-1831, or the ARL1-2044 vinyl release of the stereo release), when RCA had big plans to record Rubinstein again with Reiner after their two weeks of concerts together performing these famous concertos of Liszt...

Review:
We seem to have arrived at a Telemann paradise. Rather than continue to re-record the Telemann works that have become well known, some companies have initiated projects to record all of the works of a particular genre. Brilliant has committed itself to issuing all of Telemann’s orchestral suites, and cpo is engaged in a project to record all of the wind concertos. Now comes Caro Mitis, which is beginning its own project to record all of the orchestral suites. The two projects from Brilliant and Caro Mitis offer the collector a clear choice. Brilliant’s Collegium Instrumental Brugense (CIB) performs on modern instruments, while Caro Mitis’s Pratum Integrum Orchestra is recording the suites on period instruments. Volume 1 of Pratum Integrum’s set contains two suites already issued by Brilliant; thus, we can immediately compare the approach of the two ensembles...
