Recordings from the Inaugural Concerts of the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ in Verizon Hall

R E V I E W S:

(...) a Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony that blazes its way right to the top of the pile. Ondine provides a recording of weight and immediacy, capturing the distinctly expressive sound of the massed Philadelphia strings - substantive, meaty, a living tissue - across a soundstage that is wide and coherent, and that puts organ and orchestra in the same space.
Ted Libbey, The Absolute Sound, August 2007, Golden Ear Music Awards, Editor's Choice Award

I have never heard an organ sound so good from top to bottom in a thoroughly natural concert hall setting.
Arthur Lintgen, Fanfare Magazine, July/August 2007

The inauguration of Verizon Hall's new organ has been preserved for all of us in one of the most outstanding SACDs yet. Somehow, producer Martha de Francisco and her team (assisted by Polyhymnia) have captured the detail, sweetness, and power of the orchestra, as well as the organ’s pipes and pedals, in a recording that is more than a sound spectacular.
Kalman Rubinson, Stereophile Magazine, May 2007

The playing is jaw-droppingly beautiful (those Philadelphia strings!), and the organ so well-integrated into the sound (...) The recording itself is a stunner (...) demonstration-quality result. (...) The balance is utterly realistic, and the bass is staggeringly good if your system can reproduce it; os is the surround sound from the SACD layer. (...) As a record of a great occasion it's a winner.
Andrew McGregor, BBC Radio 3, April 30, 2007, Disc of the Week

Another winner of a SACD from the new collaboration of The Philadelphia Orchestra and the enterprising Finnish classical label Ondine. (...) This new recording (of Poulenc's Organ Concerto) stands out as the best yet in my opinion. A highly recommended hi-res surround release, and packed with nearly the limit of music one disc can hold, plus provided in a slipcase with a larger note booklet.
John Sunier, Audiophile Audtion, April 2007, Multichannel Disc of the Month

The orchestra is in glorious form, with rich strings and a ringing brass section (...). The Barber and Saint-Saëns are played in a celebratory mood, with organist, orchestra, and conductor syncing up perfectly.
Marc Geelhoed, Time Out Chicago, March 1-7, 2007

Maurice DURUFLÉ
5-7. Three Dances for Orchestra, op.6 (1938) [20:42]

Recorded in the Sinfonie an den Regnitz, Bamberg, 10th-12th November 1997

Tho ughthe Poulenc Organ Concerto has long been a personal favourite, the real find on this disc for me was the concluding item, Maurice Duruflé’s Three Dances for Orchestra, op.6, composed in 1938. I knew this composer previously only for his sacred music (principally the fine Requiem), and these colourful, melodious pieces were quite a revelation. The brilliant orchestration brings Respighi to mind, while the influence of Ravel and Debussy is strong too (though, interestingly, not that of Les Six). The first dance has an exquisite opening, with Daphnis-like gurgles in clarinet, which then gives way to a brilliant scherzo. A stately slow dance follows, and finally a lively and slightly wild Tambourin, with a wonderfully furtive ending in the bassoon. The subtle writing for percussion and the doleful alto saxophone solo in the central section give this movement a memorable colour. Before that, we have a fine and authoritative performance of the Poulenc Organ Concerto by Marie-Claire Alain, with sensitive contran absolute must for lovers of the great world of French organ music. An imaginatively plannibutions from the strings and timpani of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra...Quite a CD this, and ed programme, performed with dedication and total accomplishment... Read more

Album: Various
Released: 1996-1997
Label: Pope Music
Catalog N°:
Genre: Classical
File format: eac-log-cue-flac, scans. 5CD ~1300MB

Mark Gorenstein was born in 1946 in Odessa, where he started to take his music classes in Professor Stolyarsky music school. Later he graduated from the Kishinev Music College and Kishinev Conservatory as a violinist. Since the seventies the musician has been living in Moscow. Mark Gorenshtein worked in the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra, then in the State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgene Svetlanov. Orchestral mastering attracted the musician implacably to studying conducting art. In 1984 Mark Gorenstein graduated from the Conducting department of the Novosibirsk Conservatory (Professor Arnold Kats). In 1985-1988 he was head of Budapest Symphony Orchestra (MAV), in 1989-1992 - chief conductor of the Pusan Symphony orchestra (Republic of Korea). Mark Gorenshtein performed as a sessional conductor in many countries all over the world.
In 1993 being head of the Russian Symphony Orchestra Gorenshtein, by the reasons of art, had to change practically all the musicians in the orchestra and invite very young, even teenage musicians – students of special institutions from different cities of Russia and CIS. In the same year of 1993 the Orchestra was given its new name – “Young Russia”. This top class team, successfully touring around many Russian cities and abroad, giving performances with well-known conductors and soloists, since September 2002 after Mark Gorenstein’s leaving for the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia is being headed by Jury Bashmet.

Wolfgang Stockmeier: J.G. Walther - Organ Works. 3CD

Artist: Wolfgang Stockmeier at the Fuehrer Organ in Zetel, Germany
Album: J.G. Walther (1684-1748) - Organ Works
Released: 1991
Label: CPO
Catalog N°: cpo 999 131
Genre: Classical, Organ
File Format: eac_flac_cue_log covers 3CD 848MB

Bach and Buxtehude didn’t stand alone. Johann Gottfried Walther was another North German composer more than deserving of his place in the discographical sun and was, moreover, Bach’s cousin on his mother’s side. He studied with Pachelbel’s son and was, through him, introduced to the works of Buxtehude and this was to be of potent and lasting significance. Walther specialized in choral Preludes – he wrote over one hundred – and keyboard transcriptions of Italian concertos. In that of course his similarities with Bach are obvious and intriguing. Both worked in Weimar where they were encouraged to write the transcriptions – Bach wrote five for the organ and sixteen for the harpsichord, Walther triumphantly trumping him with a claimed seventy-eight (although only fourteen seem to have survived).

Related to J.S. Bach, his almost exact contemporary, on his mother's side, Johann Gottfried Walther was an important German organist and composer. His first organ lessons were in Erfurt with Johann Bernhard Bach, and he quickly became an able child singer. When he was 18 he landed his first organ post, at Erfurt's Thomaskirche. After a flirtation with philosophy and law at the local university, Walther turned all his attention to music, becoming especially interested in music theory. He began touring Germany on a regular basis, and in his travels he met the important theorist Andreas Werckmeister, becoming one of his protégés, if usually by long distance.... Read more

15 Don Juan

A musical treat which despite its age still sounds remarkably good.
Among the avalanche of new material the prospect of a reissue, even of an acknowledged “classic performance”, does not always whet the appetite of the overwhelmed collector. However when the re-mastering is allied with a first appearance in a new format then perhaps curiosity may yet be kindled.
Reiner’s recordings of Richard Strauss orchestral music during the 1950s are still, for many, benchmarks in this repertoire. Quite apart from the superlative playing and authoritative interpretations some of the readings were amongst the earliest examples of stereo made widely available to the general public. “Also Sprach Zarathustra” actually kicked off the series of Strauss discs as far back as 1954, to be closely followed by the “Don Juan” included on the present issue. ... Andrea Marcon’s seven-part series of organ recordings centered around the celebrated composer and organist Girolamo Frescobaldi, recorded on the “Historic Organs of Treviso” reaches its culmination with this present recording. In the wide and variegated panorama of Italian organists of the 16th and 17th centuries, the figure of Frescobaldi rises to a height which would never again be attained in the field of Italian organ music. Born in 1583, Frescobaldi stood on the threshold of the Baroque era during his creative years, and, through his developing compositional style, provided major impulses for the technical innovations realised by the instrument makers of his time..... More Living Stereo-period classics from RCA/BMG in their original three-channel form. If you have a similar or identical center channel to your left and right front speakers, you will definitely experience the improvement in fidelity, soundstaging, depth and presence. This is especially true of piano and violin concerto recordings. I wouldn’t mind BMG putting an optional derived-surround signal on tracks 4 & 5 or alternately I wish my Sunfire preamp allowed deriving a Pro Logic II surround signal from the front L & R channels to feed the surrounds. But what we hear on the three front channels is basically what the RCA engineers and producers heard off their original 30 ips tapes before they mixed the three channels down to two for LP release. The piano, already spotlighted sonically on most recordings, has an even more solid sonic image than usual. The details in the work’s many difficult passages and Cliburn’s ease of execution of them now stand out in bold relief - though of course not like one would ever hear if one were actually in Carnegie Hall at the concert... As far as greatest-hits compilations go, this 2007 reissue from EMI of Camille Saint-Saлns' best-known works is really hard to beat. Considering that complete performances of the popular "Carnival of the Animals" and the "Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Organ," are presented, along with the orchestral tone poem "Danse macabre," the "Allegro appassionato for cello and orchestra," and the "Bacchanale" from the opera "Samson and Delilah," listeners are getting quite a bargain for all the colorful music this single CD contains...
