Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No 2 34:08

Like most of the Living Stereo SACDs, this one pairs up the contents of two former LPs onto a single disc. The Tchaikovsky was the first recording to go platinum in classical music - recorded during the first Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1958 at the height of the Cold War. The l962 taping of the chestnut Rachmaninoff concerto with Reiner pulls out all the super-Romantic qualities built into the score, but being Reiner it doesn’t seem corny in the least.
The stereo stage is extremely wide compared to the two-channel option, with solid placement of the piano in the center and good depth to the orchestra.... Read more

Historic Organ Series’ third volume is dedicated to the music of one of the few composers who composed exclusively organ music during the 19th century. Padre Davide da Bergamo (1791-1863) was as well a famous organ composer as well as a virtuous organ player. He was very popular in Italy and as well very estimated by his colleagues. Although he took orders very early, his music kept a strong operastic flavour as the lyric drama then was prevalent in Italy. His style is still strongly apealing, with the crescendos à la Rossini, the dramatic modulations and the ample, belcantist melodies... Read more

Max Reger - Chamber Music Vol 1-5 - Mannheimer String Quartet

http://i027.radikal.ru/0804/4d/6d1478bf1a64.jpg

Reger is considered by many to be the most important composer to elaborate on the stylistic traits of Johannes Brahms and move German music into the twentieth century.
He was an extremely prolific composer, surpassing many of the ninetheenth century masters in volume during his short life. He was also a driven man, consumed by hard living. Reger composed in most every form of the time, except opera and the symphony proper. His style is contrapuntally dense, with extremely fast modulations lending an atonal feel to many of his lines, though the music remains strictly tonal in its harmonic direction. He was one of the main composers to resuscitate the fugue as a living, independent form. His organ music is considered by many to be second only to Johann Sebastian Bach's in depth and significance. This, along with much of his output, requires a large degree of virtuosity. His orchestral writing is virtually opaque in color – some would say turgid – having something of the feel of organ registrations, though it lightens with age. Even in his concertos, he often draws upon Protestant hymns as thematic material. His large volume of chamber music is perhaps his most significant contribution to the concert repertory. This part of his output contains some of the largest and most emotionally draining music in its genre
. ~ Todd McComb (6/94)

Mannheimer String Quartet
In 1975, four young musicians came together to form the Mannheimer String Quartet, named after a city well established in musical history. Intensive training with the Amadeus and LaSalle Quartets but most of all with the Melos Quartet prepared the young musicians for numerous performances and competitions in Europe.
During the first years of experience, the MSQ won the award at the Karl Klingler Competition in Hanover, the 9th international String Quartet Competition in Evian, Switzerland and in 1985 was awarded the "Felix-Medelssohn-Bartholdy-Preis" in Berlin. One year later the ensemble went to win the first prize at the "German Music Competition" in Bonn. It won a reputation for excellence, performs both in Germany and abroad.
The concerts as well as the recordings of the MSQ cover a wide range of string quartet literature , starting with Dittersdorf through Mozart and Tschaikowsky to Denhoff. Participation in many television and radio broadcast also prove the merits of the MSQ, placing it in the circle of renowned international string quartets.

Claudius Tanski (Piano):
...The German pianist, Claudius Tanski, began studying the piano at the age of 14 at the Folkwang-Hochschule in Essen (with Michael Deichmann and Georg Stieglitz). After completing his studies in Essen in 1978 he pursued further studies (also conducting and song accompaniment) in Salzburg, Vienna (with Professor Hans Leygraf and Professor Heinz Medjimorec), and Munich. Upon conclusion of his formal studies, Alfred Brendel was to become his most important teacher. He is the recipient of a number of major distinctions and international prizes (Vercelli, Bolzano, and Budapest among others)....

Genre: Organ
File format: eac-log-cue-wv, scans. 5CD ~78MB

VOL. 1
Organ of Hedvig Eleonora Kyrkan, Stockholm

Petr Eben is one of the foremost composers from the Czech Republic. Also known as an organist, he primarily performs his own works, but is also highly sought-after as an improviser on both the piano and the organ. His works for organ are among his most popular, including Laudes and Job - both of which are on this disc. Job is one of two major cycles Eben has written. The Book of Job is seen by the composer to be extremely topical. It answers one of the most difficult questions on life asked to this day: Why do good people suffer misfortune? The material for this work, rich in contrast, is divided into eight movements, each of which express a theme based on a quotation from the Book of Job - Destiny, Faith, Acceptance of suffering, Longing for Death, Despair and Resignation, Mystery of Creation, Penitence and Realisation, and God's Reward. This CD is the first in a projected series of Petr Eben organ music.

Laudes

1. Movement 1: Largo – Con moto – Tempo I [5'12]
2. Movement 2: Lento – Allegro solenne [4'38]
3. Movement 3: Fantastico [5'08]

VOL. 2
Organ of Hedvig Eleonora Kyrkan, Stockholm

Petr Eben was commissioned to write the stage music for a production of Goethe's Faust for the anniversary of the Burgtheater in Vienna (the later version for the organ solo came about in 1980). For this work, he set himself the task of expressing the polarity of good and evil in one person, since he felt the idea behind Goethe's drama was not to create a play about God and Mephistopheles taking place around Faust, but rather to demonstrate the struggle of these conflicting elements within Faust's character. That is the reason why he also sought to realise musically both influences within the one instrument. Consequently, Eben gives the organ a dual role, adding to its venerable, traditional style, the trivial vulgarity of a barrel organ. Thus, the Faust cycle provides us with a glimpse into the eternal struggle within man's being. The rhythmic element of the organ has always inspired Eben, and in the Four Biblical Dances he chooses the rarely used genre of the dance. The organ as a church instrument led him to keep its sacred characteristics so Eben therefore chose dances which appear in the Bible.

Faust
1. Movement 1: Prologue [4'16]
2. Movement 2: Mysterium [6'47]

3. Movement 3: Song of the beggar with the hurdy-gurdy [1'37]

. Movement 5: Student songs [3'28]

VOL. 3
Organ of
Oslo Cathedral

Here is the third instalment of our recordings of the complete organ music of the distinguished Czech composer Petr Eben, certainly one of the 20th century's most significant and prolific writers of organ music. We estimate that the series will eventually run to five discs. (Possibly six, since Mr Eben is currently working on another piece.) For this disc, Norwegian organist Halgeir Schiager has chosen the instrument of Oslo Cathedral. He is joined by a second organist, Kare Nordstoga, for the 'Mutations for One or Two Organs'. VOL. 4
Organ of Hedvig Eleonora Kyrkan, Stockholm

Those who have been following Halgeir Schiager’s pioneering survey of Petr Eben’s extraordinary organ works will find any words of recommendation for this new disc unnecessary; for the newcomer, the twelve Protestant Chorales at the heart of this recital will provide an excellent starting-point – the most literally contemporary (composed in 2000) music in the cycle, and yet reassuringly rooted around the traditional chorale melodies of the Church. Petr Eben is one of the foremost composers from the Czech Republic. Also known as an organist, he primarily performs his own works, but is also highly sought-after as an improviser on both the piano and the organ. His works for organ are among his most popular.

VOL. 5

Petr Eben is one of the foremost composers from the Czech Republic. Also known as an organist, he primarily performs his own works, but is also highly sought-after as an improviser on both the piano and the organ. His works for organ are among his most popular.

Vol. 5 - The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart / Momenti d'Organo / Chorale Preludes / Campanae Gloriosae / Amen - es werde wahr

Gunther Rost at the Jann organs in Waldsassen basilica

This double SACD concludes the five-volume edition of Petr Eben's complete works for organ performed by Gunther Rost. It mainly features Eben's latest and most extensive cycle for organ and speaker as of now, The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart. The cycle's texts are taken from Jan Amos Comenius' book of the same title. The speaker is the renowned German recitor Gert Westphal († 2002), who already appeared in Job, the series' second volume. Recorded in 2002, this production can safely be considered the great recitor's last one.
Furthermore, the SACD also features Gunther Rost's interpretation of Momenti d'Organo, Campanae Gloriosae and Ten Chorale Preludes performed at the Jann organs in Waldsassen basilica, as well as the concluding chorale fantasy Amen - es werde wahr.
- Comprehensive booklet with commentary on the works and music examples,
in German and English.

Recorded 9 November 1959 on 3-track tape at Orchestra Hall, Chicago and issued originally as RCA LSC 2438, this vivid inscription is only the third Mahler rendition we have from the baton of Fritz Reiner (1888-1963), noted for his peerless control of orchestra and chorus, and for his implacable perfectionism. Reiner has only his Mahler Fourth Symphony (RCA 67901-2) and a Pittsburgh Symphony rendering of Songs of a Wayfarer (with Carol Brice) to supplement his catalogue in this passionate repertory, while Bruckner holds no place in the Reiner canon...
The half-hour Farewell (Der Abschied) alternates flute, oboe, harp and contralto voice in the wistful, ineluctable leave-taking, wherein deep pools of reverie and nostalgia resonate. A spectacular, poignant reissue... Read more

Review:
Markus Zepf in: Ars Organi - 52. Jahrgang / Heft 1, III/2004 Petr Eben, Das Orgelwerk Vol. 1 und Vol. 2

Im Januar 2004 beging der Prager Komponist Petr Eben seinen 75. Geburtstag.

Petr Eben (1929-2007) is a major composer of contemporary organ music whose compositions enjoy great international renown. The interpretation recorded on this CD series was largely influenced by the composer's personal suggestions and comments. The series compiles all of Eben's works for solo organ which have been published to this date, played by Gunther Rost on various contemporary instruments.

Review:
Ralph Blakely in: American Record Guide, July/August 2003
EBEN: Faust, Mutationes
There have been several recordings recently of the works of Petr Eben (b 1929). I reviewed his Faust in January / February 2002 and Mutationes in September / October 2002, both played by Halgier Schiager.
In this new release Gunther Rost plays Faust and Mutationes on the 62-stop, four-manual Goll organ in St Martin's Church, Memmingen, near the Lake of Constance. The organ sounds splendid and seems well suited for Eben's work, with its demands for rapid stop changes and many colors.
Eben's work is episodic and programmatic, with quick alterations not only in mood but in style. Rost is by far the best player of this music I've heard. He manages the shifts in style so skillfully that it sounds easy to do, though it certainly could not be. I enjoy this record and I expect to hear more from this fine organist.

EBEN: Faust, Mutationes
