The first of the more modern sets that I came up with were Wolfgang Stockmeier whose LP recordings of the 1980s, all played on Kreienbrinck organs, all make an absolutely adorable sound.
I haven't heard other performances of Bach's organ works (except in my parish church)so I cannot really compare this to others. However, I find this recording extremely listenable and straightforward. Moreover, for a beginner to Bach's organ music this edition comes at a very reasonable price (at least in Germany). Highly recommended!
At first, I regarded Stockmeier's recordings as pedestrian, but altered my opinion after listening to some of the works. Some of the music is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. Definitely a creditable performance. My only criticism is that the music notes are in German only.
