Introduction:
A “seventeenth-century Art of Fugue” — The seventh volume of the Froberger Edition on AEOLUS is perhaps the craziest: a roller-coaster ride through the world of the fugue, performed with virtuosity and the spirit of adventure. Bob van Asperen plays himself here into an absolute frenzy!
Froberger’s Capriccios show a composer who not only perfectly mastered his métier, but drove his art forward to new heights. Not without reason, the accompanying text (written by the performer) points out many connections to the works of J. S. Bach. With Bob van Asperen, the Edition features an exceptional interpreter who performs these works just as passionately as knowledgeably. Eighteen multi-part Capriccios are to be heard, also including a recently discovered work.
As in all the other volumes of the Edition, an important historical instrument is employed: here it is the large Arp Schnitger organ of the Ludgerikirche in Norden (Eastern Friesland, Germany), which with its numerous stops allows the wealth of polyphony to resound.

Boismortier was a French Baroque composer who lived until 1755 and is distinguished for having been one of the first composers to make huge profits from publishing his music for public sale, and having no patrons. A music theorist of the time wrote of him “Happy be Boismortier, who fertile pen can give birth without pain to a new piece of music every month.”  To this, Boismortier would simply reply: “I’m earning money.”  He used the Italian concerto form and wrote many works for both instruments and voice. He dedicated his six sonatas of 1742 to a celebrated French flutist and composer, Michel Blavet, and due to their creative and graceful nature the works have remained among the most popular of Boismortier’s...

Disc reviews:
...The instrument of choice for an agreeable evening with an intimate circle of friends in Paris during this time was the transverse flute. It was known for its delicate sound and it had a ready audience. It was known as the “German flute,” and it gradually replaced its predecessor, the recorder.  Boismortier was fascinated by the flute, and his legacy includes works for from two to even five flutes, and combined with other instruments. Surprisingly, nobody else prior to Boismortier had thought of combining the transverse flute with the harpsichord, though it was a natural. Both instruments were at the very height of Parisian fashion.
Thus the Six Sonatas went over most successfully. Their three-movement structure carries French titles, but corresponds to the Italian system of Allegro/Grazioso/Allegro. Boismortier joked that he put in “melodies like butterflies,” but both instrumental parts have complexities and depth. —John Sunier

Olga Martynova plays harpsichord from Von Nagel Workshop, Paris, 2005 / after N.&F. Blanchet, Paris, 1730
Ivan Bushuev plays transverse flute from R. Tutz, Innsbruck, Austria, 2002 / after G. A. Rottenburgh, Belgium, 1760s

B-A-C-H and Liszt — two challenges with their own individual dimensions. The Gewandhaus organist Michael Schönheit, having pledged himself to this Western musical alliance, now presents a fascinating portrait of the historically most significant instrument of the Bach-Liszt tradition. On this album the magnificent Ladegast organ in the Merseburg Cathedral is documented in sound for the first time since its extensive reconstruction.

On this CD:
01.    Tu es Petrus        06:30
02.    Ave Maria von Arcedelt        04:40
03.    Ave Maria (WA Mozart)        03:06
04.    Evocation a la chapelle sixtine        20:51
05.    Fantasie und Fuge uber Ad nos: Fantasie        25:37
06.    Fuge        10:53

Even today the magnificent baroque front of the organ from the year 1697 commands the Merseburg Cathedral. Towering up into the vault, it fills the space between the towers, while the loft with the choir organ projects forward on the side to the western nave pillars. One of the most impressive romantic instruments north of the Alps is housed behind the baroque front: 5,700 pipes and the old Stahlspiel, in its time one of Germany’s largest organs, built by Friedrich Ladegast (1818-1905).
